Swedish Word Order Explained

Swedish word order becomes much easier when you understand four patterns: normal main clauses, V2, questions and the position of inte.

V2 ruleQuestionsNegation

How does Swedish word order work?

A neutral Swedish sentence often uses subject + verb + object/place: Jag dricker kaffe. But Swedish also has V2 word order, which means the verb stays second if another phrase comes first: Idag dricker jag kaffe.

Swedish word order explained simply

Swedish word order is not random. It is more rule-based than English in many main clauses. The biggest pattern is V2: the verb comes second in a main clause. Questions usually put the verb before the subject. Negation with inte usually comes after the first verb in a simple main clause.
