Swedish V2 Rule Explained

The Swedish V2 rule means that the finite verb normally comes in the second position in a main clause.

What is the Swedish V2 rule?

The Swedish V2 rule means verb second. In a normal main clause, the finite verb comes in the second position. If a time expression comes first, the verb still comes second: Idag går jag hem, not Idag jag går hem.

The V2 rule explained simply

V2 does not always mean the verb is the second word. It means the verb is the second sentence position. A whole phrase can take the first position. In På måndag arbetar jag, the phrase På måndag is one position, so arbetar comes second. This is one of the most important differences between Swedish and English word order.

V2 rule examples

Jag går hem idag.I am going home today.
Idag går jag hem.Today I am going home.
På måndag arbetar hon.On Monday she works.
I Sverige bor vi nära havet. In Sweden we live near the sea.

Swedish V2 rules

In a main clause, the finite verb normally comes second.

The first position can be a subject, time phrase, place phrase or another sentence element.

If something other than the subject comes first, the subject usually moves after the verb.

Common V2 mistakes

English speakers often write Idag jag arbetar. Swedish needs Idag arbetar jag.

Do not apply the main-clause V2 rule blindly to subordinate clauses. Start with simple main clauses first.
